A Fold Beyond started as an Instagram profile, showcasing beautiful origami works crafted with premium papers.
Paper has always been a favorite thing of mine, starting with books at a young age. I hate to sound cliché, but that new book smell is supreme. It's not just the smell, but the feel of the books. This is harder to explain, as newer prints tend to lack the thicker, toothier yet flexible paper from prints pre-2000s.
In middle school, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes was required reading and our teacher taught us how to fold Cranes. As an avid folder of paper airplanes, my curiosity practically exploded with excitement at this new way to fold paper.
This was a time when the internet was not as prevalent, so the models I learned were few, and usually shown to me by a dear Vietnamese friend. By the time I was an adult and friends parted ways, I was more accustomed to finding models online.
I mostly would leave the origami I folded in public places or gift them to people as is their traditional purpose. Over the years I gained a reputation as the Origami Man in my town, and people would often give me their spare paper. It was one such occurrence that introduced me to premium washi paper.
There were only a few sheets of this paper available to me, so I started searching online. I was currently making flowers and the soft texture of that washi paper added to the likeness of the flower.
Finding quality paper for the craft was a pain for me. I can be a perfectionist and I would always be disappointed. Order from overseas and it takes a month to get to me. Order Low priced washi and it has no texture. Order high-quality washi with fast shipping and every square has one side too short. Buying in person was even worse, as few retailers had a selection of paper for origami, including the top chains.
Finding quality paper should not be this difficult. It should be simple and when you get the package, you should be excited for the smell, the texture, and everything else that makes a true quality paper. Quality paper already has life to it and our job as artists is to expose that through our unique perspectives.
So I have invested wisely, launched this site, and partnered with esteemed manufacturers like Toyo, known for Tant origami paper, to bring you the best. Yet, there's more to come.
I hope one day this storefront will be the place to go for all quality paper needs. As an artist with a full-time job that process could take time, much like our favorite models. Like those models, I hope to inspire your creativity by providing a quality inventory that expands along with our community by broadening products and decreasing shipping times.
